Often out of the best of intentions, in trying to help a loved one who is suffering from depression, people make mistakes. What are they and how can they be avoided?

1. Know: he needs you, even if it seems that he does not.

2. Listen.

3. never say "get a grip" unless you are going to give detailed instructions.

4. Remember: depression is an illness. The sufferer may say things they don't really mean.

5. Try to put yourself in your loved one's shoes. What seems simple to you may be an unbearable ordeal for a depressed person.

6. Don't take depression personally. It is not your fault.

7. Be patient. There will be ups and downs.

8. Ask what you can do to help. But the most important thing you can do is just be there for them.

9. Ease life/work pressures if possible.

10. Try to make sure that the depressed person does not feel even more "weird" than they do now.
